Healing through Ayurvedic massage

I have always loved to give massages. I am an empath and though that comes with ups and downs, it certainly is a plus in relation to giving a massages. To have a natural sensitivity towards the other person’s needs and to be able to read a person’s response to what you do: place, technique, rhythm, pressure etc all helps a great deal.

For no reason, I engaged in a massage course before (holistic massage) and read several books. However, this summer, as part of my Ayurvedic training I received an intense Abhyanga Ayurvedic massage training as part of my studies at Ayurdaay Nilayam.

I am now happily practising my Ayurvedic massage skills in a wonderful practice in Amsterdam South (Amsterdam South Health Center).

“I am still enjoying the massage from last Friday. Can be so addictive….. I will definitely come back to you for this!” – Lonneke D.

Are you also in need for a massage?
Please contact me if you are interested. Each appointment I start by evaluating your polse and asking you a few questions in order to determine any disbalance and what could be beneficial for the massage.

Ayurvedic massage oil

With Ayurvedic massage we use plenty of warm oil (mmmmmm!). that is massages deeply into the tissues, nourishing your whole body and calming your nervous system.

According to your constititution, disbalance, the season, your plans after the massage etc I will choose a medicated oil which is beneficial for you. A medicated oil combines a base oil (such as sesame, almond, coconut, or sunflower) that can be infused with a decoction of one or more Ayurvedic herbs—combining the nourishing and soothing qualities of the oil with the healing properties of the herbs.

Benefits of Abhyanga oil massage

There come many benefits with Abhyanga massage. Abhyanga massage is especially good for people with more Vata in their constitution or people who’s Vata dosha is aggravated. It also helps pacify Pitta, using more cooling oils. By nature, Kapha people have more of the heavy, oily, smooth and soft qualities of oil by nature. Too much oily massages can aggravate their Kapha and create ‘ama’ (toxins). If given Abhyanga massage they do better with using less and a more heating oil, or no oil at all and instead use a special massage powder, called – Udvartana.

The massage comes with many strokes, long and short, covering the full body. Pace and pressure adjusted to your wishes/disbalance. I will give some extra care to muscle knots, but in general it is not a though massage like – connective tissue or sports massage. The medicated oil will do its work, penetrating deep within the body and leaving its effects long after the massage has ended.

Te main benefits are:

  • Increased circulation, especially to nerve endings
  • Toning of the muscles and the whole physiology
  • Calming for the nerves
  • Lubrication of the joints
  • Increased mental alertness
  • Improved elimination of impurities from the body
  • Softer, smoother skin
  • Increased levels of stamina through the day
  • Better, deeper sleep at night

Massage in autumn

Abhyanga massage is beneficial throughout the whole year. However, as autumn is considered Vata season (the dry, rough, cold, irregular, mobile qualities of Vata express themselves through windy storms, irregular and changeable weather, dropping temperatures and leafs falling from the trees) this may also increase and aggravate Vata dosha within our own system, causing:

  • nervousness, anxiety, panic, fear
  • dry or chapped skin
  • constipation, gas, bloating, dry, hard stools
  • light, interrupted sleep
  • spacey, scattered feeling
  • excess thinking or worrying

To pacify Vata dosha in autumn, Abhyanga oil massage is therefore highly recommended.

So just as you consider a healthy meal, exercise, sleep and company a part of your self care, the benefits of massage should nog be missed.

It would love to welcome you for a massage any time soon.
